@Nancy Still: The vinegar and baking powder react together to form little bubbles in the batter as it cooks to produce the "rise" in the cake! Sour cream reacts the same with certain additives (I've forgotten if its baking powder or baking soda; maybe both! LOL!) Now as far as the icing goes, the vinegar maybe there to give it a slightly sour taste like cream cheese or even sour cream... Not really as sure on this one!

Thank you. If it calls for it, it's best to use the original. Sometimes I'm not that good at substitutions.. Thank you for getting back with me..

Others have used buttermilk...I did not. There is vinegar in the cake and vinegr to sour the milk. I have no clue why the vinegar is used.

Wow, this looks so good. I crave chocolate. My mother did also. I am a diabetic and I slip around and eat a piece of something like this at times. My blood sugars run a little bit low and in control, so I am pleased that I can do this. I don't think that this will hang around too long.. at my house with two grown children, ages 22 and 25.This is such a good picture. I do have one question tho. Is the vinegar for the purpose of making the milk sour and why do you use sour milk? I just can't figure out the science behind it.. is for taste since it is so sweet or what..? Can you just use buttermilk..Just pondering.. over this.. thank you.
